About Me
When my friend lost her wallet and passport in Italy at midnight, I immediately Googled questions like “how to get an emergency passport in Italy without identification?” and “where is the Italian embassy located?". I was the lucky one to break the news that the embassy opened after our plane departed. In that moment, I also wondered if I’d be returning to the U.S. After lots of tissues, borrowed money, and lying - I mean, reassuring - everything worked out. The funny thing about travelling is that the stories you tell the most are often the most unfortunate ones - they’re also the ones where we learn the most.
I remember gushing about how incredible our trip to Budapest was going to be. Judging by friends of friends’ Instagrams, Budapest looked so carefree and bohemian chic. Unfortunately, the bathtub in my AirBnb said otherwise. It had no shower head or shower curtain - it was all tub. To my surprise, the water was warm... for two and a half minutes. There I was, in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and suddenly, I missed warm showers along with the other fine delicacies Philadelphia has to offer.
A few days later, we were lugging our carry ons and backpacks to board a train from Salzburg to Prague. After a half mile of huffing and puffing, I began to trail behind my friend. She looked over her shoulder to tell me to hurry up and without hesitation, she stopped and turned around. She told me to do the same. I thought, "No way am I missing this train, I’ll be out 90 Euros." Little did I know, the view behind me was priceless. I saw the Alps all week, but I've never seen them from this perspective. Train or not, I could have stood there all day.
If you compared the pictures from my travels alongside someone else’s, mine would never, ever look as nice. I can guarantee that I’ll never capture the perfect lighting or camera angle, but I’m positive that I can handle missing passports with instinct and compassion, uncomfortable living situations with humor and gratitude, and I will always appreciate my current environment before boarding on to the next adventure. One thing’s for certain, no matter how unpleasant the situation, I’ll always find a way to solve what I can and look on the bright side.
